Meet our Superkids in Second Grade!

"Plant your bulbs in the long boxes," the class read in unison, "Then you can have lunch." The second grade students were anxious to find out what happened to Alf and Ettabetta, the main characters in today's Superkids story. They read aloud together to find out why Alf has been bullying Ettabetta and what she was going to do about it. The students were so caught up in the story that none of them realized that they were being taught to read, and that it was fun.

In 2009, St. Pius V School teamed up with the Rowland Reading Foundation to become a Super School. The foundation was founded by Pleasant T. Rowland, a former teacher who combined her love of American history and her commitment to high-quality educational products when she created The American Girls Collection. Today, American Girl is more than 25-years-old and has stores around the country and across the globe. Mrs. Rowland's generosity and genuine care for children led her to found the Rowland Reading Foundation, an organization committed to improving literacy in elementary grade students.

"Teaching Children to read in the primary grades is the most urgent task in education today," says Mrs. Rowland, "Children who cannot read fluently by the end of second grade will struggle in school forever after." The Rowland Reading Foundation created the Superkids Reading Program to help kindergarten, first and second grade students achieve their literacy goals.

The program comes with a bold promise: Every child will learn to read.

The students in Ms. Diaz' second grade classroom today have been Superkids since they were in kindergarten. Their reading scores on last year's Terra Nova test were well above the national average with several students scoring about the 85th percentile. Nearly all of them are reading at or above grade level. Listening to them read aloud, it is immediately clear that the Superkids Program has been effective. These students are reading, and they are enjoying it.
